A Drill for Quality Range Time

Here is an easy range drill you can set up with your friends. You can also modify this drill for rifles or shotguns.

Elements

  1. Practice all elements of safe gun handling.
  2. Wear Your Full Concealed Carry Clothing Set
    • Leather gun belt
    • Kydex IWB concealment holster
    • Double magazine pouch
    • Concealment garment
      • No fisherman’s vest or photographer’s vests!
        • These are often jokingly called “Shoot me first!” vests.
      • No jackets in the middle of a Northern Virginia summer!
  3. Set the target carrier to a distance of 21 feet or less
  4. Print out 3-4 sheets with large numbers printed on them (you can also large colored circles or squares)
  5. Set the target carrier to rotate to face you at time intervals
    • The time to rotate can vary and the time the target faces you can vary
    • Set this to repeat three times
  6. Print out 3-4 sheets with large numbers printed on them (you can also large colored circles or squares)
  7. Load your three magazines (one in the pistol, two in the magazine pouches) with about 3-5 rounds each
    • You can do this with more ammo than that as well.

Running the Drill

  1. Time Delay
  2. Target Presents
  3. Shooter fires 3-5 shots to slide lock
  4. Shooter immediately reloads
  5. Shooter looks to his rear left and rear right.
  6. Partners will hold up random numbers (or colors) that the shooter will call out when he sees them as he checks behind him.
  7. Repeat 3 times for each magazine.

Conclusion

Little things like this can go a long way towards making your range sessions more fun and enriching.
