From NYPD investigates beating as possible hate crime – New York News.
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) –The family and friends of a beating victim had a rally in support of him on Sunday at 53rd Street and 7th Avenue, where the attack happened and they’re asking anyone with information to come forward..Award winning journalist Randy Gener is in intensive care at St Luke’s Roosevelt hospital, recovering from brain surgery. Around 3a.m. on January 17th, police say he was punched in the head by at least one attacker across the street from the Sheraton Hotel. His younger sister Jessica can’t believe the big brother who always protected her now needs her help.
Jessica flew in from her California home to be by her brother’s side as he recovers from the traumatic brain injury and learns to speak again. She says he was her rock when they lost their mother earlier this year.
Gener is deeply involved with the city’s Filipino and theater communities.
Gener has reported and written for The New York Times, National Public Radio, the Village Voice, Time Out New York and New York Magazine, among other media outlets, according to his website.
His friends have set up a Facebook page to help cover his medical expenses, and what is expected to be a long recovery. More than money, Randy’s family and friends are looking for answers.
Detectives are looking into this case as a possible hate crime because Gener is gay, but nothing is being ruled out. Some believe it sounds like a knockout game incident.
There were surveillance cameras right on the scene which could offer some help.
