20 Tells that Might Give Away CCW Folks and Cops

Some are tongue-in-cheek, some are real tells.

  1. 5.11 Tactical Cargo Pants
    1. More of a cop tell
  2. Buzz Cut Hair
    1. More of a cop tell
  3. Jacket with a zipper sleeve running down one arm
    1. This is a cop tell.
  4. Thicker than normal leather belt
  5. Checking the gun
    1. Guys that are inexperienced in carrying or not using a holster will often check the gun to be sure it remains in place
  6. The gun is showing or printing.
    1. This is part of why I dislike small of the back or behind the hip carry.
  7. Black or earth tone polo style golf shirts
  8. Earth tone “ruggedized” sneakers meant for hiking
    1. Not as obvious as the combat boots but still noticeable
    2. The texturing on the bottom is a bit more aggressive than regular tennis shoes.
  9. Gun company or tactical organization apparel
    1. Anything that uses crusader iconography or stylized crucifixes
    2. Infidel shirts
    3. Anything that looks like a variant of a triquetra
  10. Thin Blue Line themed apparel
  11. Nylon “Wilderness belt”
    1. I actually like these belts a lot as long as they are not visible
  12. Camo pants
    1. This screams “21 year old who just bought his first handgun”
  13. Combat Boot style shoes (usually desert tan)
  14. G-Shock Watch
    1. Timekeeping is important for operating in operations!
  15. The visible folding knife clip along the middle crease line of the pants leg.
    1. You may want to consider moving the clip towards the front pocket
  16. Anything paracord
  17. The “Shoot Me First” Vest
    1. It either screams old man who needs his pocket space or CCW guy stuck in the 1990s.
  18. The Plaid Short Sleeve “Dilbert” Shirt sold by 5.11
    1. It is a step up from the “shoot me first” vest
  19. The slight “Command Presence Voice”
    1. This is much more common with police officers (both male and female) than CCW civilians
    2. Some would describe it as similar to when a little kid does an impression of an adult
  20. The cadenced and measured speech pattern
    1. This is more of a cop tell than a CCW civilian tell.

This is just damn silly and inaccurate as it gets.

About 4 of those might be accurate. The rest are garbage that could be anyone.

Besides the fact that half of your ‘tells’ are symbolic of granola munching hippies and the other half is from Campmor or REI shoppers (but I repeat myself) , my thoughts:

    1. 5.11 Tactical Cargo Pants – Cargo pants and shorts are pretty popular. My 13 year old daughter wears them.
    2. Buzz Cut Hair – Hair doesn’t tell anything.
    3. Jacket with a zipper sleeve running down one arm – I don’t even know what this is, unless a pilot’s jacket.
    4. Thicker than normal leather belt – Possibly, but if it is concealed, the belt is usually covered.
    5. Checking the gun – Definitely, but only with inexperienced carriers
    6. The gun is showing or printing. Could be a cell, which is what most people think.
    7. Black or earth tone polo style golf shirts – Really?
    8. Earth tone “ruggedized” sneakers meant for hiking – Really? HIKING shoes. ‘Facepalm’
    9. Gun company or tactical organization apparel – Possible
    10. Thin Blue Line themed apparel – Possible
    11. Nylon “Wilderness belt” – Again, most belts are covered when concealed carrying.
    12. Camo pants – I live in Florida, everyone and their brother wears camo. It actually just screams redneck.
    13. Combat Boot style shoes (usually desert tan) – Hundreds of thousands of soldiers came home with boots and wear them.
    14. G-Shock Watch – ROFLMAO – a watch, really?
    15. The visible folding knife clip – Possible
    16. Anything paracord – Every company and charity offers paracord bracelets. Means nothing.
    17. The “Shoot Me First” Vest – or a photographer, or an engineer. But I’ll give you that one.
    18. The Plaid “Dilbert” Shirt – Hipster wear, not carrier wear. Possibly works for NASA.
    19. The slightly lowered and “breathy” tone of voice – too dumb to even comment on
    20. The precisely cadenced and measured speech pattern – too dumb to even comment on

You should try getting out of your mom’s basement, occasionally.
