on October 03, 2013 at 5:12 PM, updated October 03, 2013 at 5:23 PMWINSTON COUNTY, Alabama — Two of the four people found dead in a car south of Double Springs Wednesday were due in court that day in Tennessee on child molestation and child pornography charges, the Winston County sheriff said Thursday.
The four people were found shot to death in a car in the Black Pond community about five miles south of Double Springs Wednesday night, Sheriff Rick Harris said. The deaths are believed to be some kind of murder-suicide, he said, but authorities are unsure exactly what happened.
The names of the four people, who range in age from their early 20s to mid-50s, have not been released as some relatives have not been contacted, Harris said. Some of the people are related, and all knew each other, he said.
Harris said the four had been in the area for several days and were staying with relatives in north Alabama. They had some family connections in the Empire area and possibly in the Hamilton area, but no known ties specifically to Winston County, he said.
Harris said investigators have concluded that the incident had nothing to do with drugs or hostility, that it was all self-contained. Investigators have found the weapon used.
Harris told AL.com earlier Thursday that reports the four were found brutally beaten were incorrect. The four victims were shot.
The four have been taken to Huntsville for autopsies. Investigators are also doing a trace and trajectory study to figure out exactly how the shooting happened.

I respectfully disagree.
DailyKos counting people who died under…well questionable circumstances as “victims of gun violence” is a way of dishonestly “padding the numbers” to push for restrictions on the basic human right of self defense.
Mike Bloomberg’s Mayors Against Illegal Guns read aloud the name of the dead Boston bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev at a vigil as a “victim of gun violence”. They regret it now because they got caught.
At the “CT Against Gun Violence” seminar at Wesleyan University, the presenters made a point advising their activists to avoid and prevent any discussion of the context behind gun deaths they memorialize/read aloud or in statistics they cite.
This sort of dishonesty needs to be exposed and if that means being loud and shrill about it to get fellow gun owners’ attention, so be it.
The gun prohibitionists are loud and shrill in the ways that they malign gun owners so we have to respond in kind.
Simple truism is if you are in a fair fight, then your tactics suck.

Just before I begin, I want to say that I’m not trying to preach at you, and I’m not a “gun prohibitionist”.
First of all, the only mentioning of guns directly was “The four victims were shot”, and it was a quote from the Sheriff.
Secondly, these individuals were charged, not convicted. I don’t know these men, and they could have been horrible people, but for now, its still innocent until proven guilty. (Well, unless you’re labelled a terrorist.)
Finally, even if they were child molesters, this doesn’t mean they deserve to die and shouldn’t be mourned. I don’t like what child molesters do, and I think harsher sentences should be implemented alongside more funding for rehabilitation research and treatment. But stripping an individual of their humanity and caring nothing for their life leads you down a dangerous path of moral ambiguity.
What Jon said was right, you aren’t helping your cause. Your complaint was unfounded and makes you an easy target. I’m not trying to attack you here, I’m just trying to help.
With all that said, I think your blog does a service in raising practical safety issues that people can and should take care of, and I thank you.

My apologies, I noticed that top line (in bold no less) about how they were shot to death. Though they were shot to death, and no flavor adjectives or adverbs were used, so the statement itself is not anti-gun.

The strategy behind articles that are just listings without comment or context is that they aim to “pad the numbers” of people killed by firearms for the overall purpose of messaging that “GUNS ARE BAD!” as opposed to trying to get the reader to think a bit further as to why the fatalities happened in the first place.

Fair enough, and I can see how this can subconsciously do that. The gun was just the most effective way of carrying out whatever goal the culprit had (killing). Unfortunately most modern “journalism” skips over cause and focuses solely on effect.
So the use of firearms may be irrelevant, but it wasn’t really the focus of the discussion. Now, I’m not familiar with this website, but just from this seems like a fairly standard article.
I still think your post took an overly aggressive stance on the matter, but this is just my opinion.
Journalists aren’t psychologists, or sociologists, and even if they were, they don’t have access to these people’s personal lives. They aren’t qualified to say with certainty why this happened, only that it happened.
And anyone who would read this and assume the fault lay in the fact guns exist rather than complex social and psychological issues, well.. maybe they shouldn’t be having children. (Kidding)
