This is not legal advice and should be construed as such.
I honestly cannot answer that question.
What I can say is that I would not be surprised if the families of those murdered by Elliot Rodger filed suit against Elliot Rodger’s estate and against his father filmmaker Peter Rodger.
So the lesson here is that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
- Lock down your firearms when not in use!
- Keep tabs on what your kids are doing!
- Since Elliot Rodger was living off of Peter Rodger’s money then it would not have been unreasonable for Peter Rodger to have kept track of transactions done through Elliot Rodger’s bank card or credit card.
- The family attorney Alan Shifman apparently said that the Rodger family was very much “against guns” so multiple firearms transactions on the bank statement would have gotten the attention of Peter Rodger if he or someone who worked for him was paying attention to the bank statement.
We have those rules (in Sweden) and many more (including obligatory LICENSES with tests and checks on owners (including mentally, no OC, hard limits in sorts and number of weapons aso.)). And it works, almost no gunkillings, no “misstaken intruder” tragedies, no small kids shooting themselves, extremely few used in family feuds, and no weekly mass shootings and much more…
